SUMMARY:Learning Forum: The Squatters Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:Learning Forum: The Squatters Dilemma – Global Housing Lessons for Local Housing Problems \nSponsored by Magnolia United Church of Christ Via Zoom \nFrom tent clusters in parks\, to RVs along roadsides\, to boarded-up but lived-in houses\, squatting\, in its various forms\, has become more visible in recent years. These living arrangements often spark fears about public health and safety\, which in turn have led to new laws that ban camping in public spaces. \nIn this talk\, explore how communities around the world have confronted squatting — sometimes successfully\, sometimes not. What lessons can we bring home to Washington? And how might we use them to build stronger communities while respecting others’ experiences? \nJoseph Lenti is a professor of history at Eastern Washington University. The author of two books and numerous articles\, his research has grappled with subjects including labor unions in Mexico\, land conservation expropriation in Costa Rica\, and trends of dispossession and squatting in Latin America\, past and present. \nPreregister using this link. After registering\, you will receive an email confirmation with zoom access link.

SUMMARY:Learning Forum: Why Trust is Essential to Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Magnolia United Church of Christ invites you to join us for an online Learning Forum that discusses why throughout the world\, democratic institutions and norms are eroding. At the core of this breakdown\, argues political scientist Dr. Jacob S. Lewis\, is a deeper crisis of trust. Trust\, which builds slowly\, can be destroyed quickly—and is very hard to resurrect. In this talk\, discover the “three verbs” of trust: bonding\, bridging\, and breaking\, and get a foundational overview of how trust operates within democratic societies. How can we work to rebuild trust together and create a stronger democratic future? \n  \nJacob S. Lewis\, an associate professor in the School of Politics\, Philosophy\, and Public Affairs at Washington State University. His research focuses on the relationship between trust\, conflict\, and democracy. His work has been published in the Journal of Peace Research\, Political Behavior\, Political Psychology\, Political Geography\, Social Movement Studies\, the Journal of Conflict Resolution\, and more. \nThis talk is underwritten by a grant from Humanities of Washington and presented in partnership with The Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service and will require preregistration. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the Learning Forum zoom meeting. \n  \nLink: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/zh_jfIdrSIKEiHo4vwvuIQ
