SUMMARY:Learning Forum: The Squatters Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:Learning Forum: The Squatters Dilemma – Global Housing Lessons for Local Housing Problems \nSponsored by Magnolia United Church of Christ Via Zoom \nFrom tent clusters in parks\, to RVs along roadsides\, to boarded-up but lived-in houses\, squatting\, in its various forms\, has become more visible in recent years. These living arrangements often spark fears about public health and safety\, which in turn have led to new laws that ban camping in public spaces. \nIn this talk\, explore how communities around the world have confronted squatting — sometimes successfully\, sometimes not. What lessons can we bring home to Washington? And how might we use them to build stronger communities while respecting others’ experiences? \nJoseph Lenti is a professor of history at Eastern Washington University. The author of two books and numerous articles\, his research has grappled with subjects including labor unions in Mexico\, land conservation expropriation in Costa Rica\, and trends of dispossession and squatting in Latin America\, past and present. \nPreregister using this link. After registering\, you will receive an email confirmation with zoom access link.

SUMMARY:Create Space for Play\, Connection & Creativity
DESCRIPTION:Sun\, Oct 25 · 1pm–8pm · 50 minutes north of Seattle · 12 spots \n$188 Early Bird · $265 Full Price Early Bird ends 10/9 – use code “EARLYBIRD” at checkout. \n \nYou used to color outside the lines without thinking twice. Somewhere along the way\, making things became something only “real artists” did. And the voice that says i don’t have any ideas got louder than the part of you that just wants to play. \n \nA professor of mine once asked our class to raise our hands if we thought we were creative. After a few of us did\, he said\, “if you didn’t raise your hand\, you’re wrong.” \n \nI’ve believed that ever since. We’re all creators. Every time you try a new recipe\, pick up a puzzle or start a hobby\, that’s creativity\, even if you’ve never called it that. What blocks us isn’t a lack of talent. It’s the shame and pressure we put on ourselves to be good at it. \n \nThis day is about turning that voice down. You don’t need a skill or a plan here\, and nothing you make has to be good. You get an afternoon of slow movement\, open-ended making\, deep rest and good people\, 50 minutes from Seattle on 5 quiet acres.

SUMMARY:Bid\, Bite & Belong; Show Your Colors – Magnolia United Church of Christ’s Annual Salmon Dinner Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:MUCC’s Annual Salmon Dinner directs ALL net proceeds to charities championed by our Congregation. This year we will also have a silent auction during the first hour of the evening for some wonderful experiences including a Whistler condo stay\, Seattle Sounders and Kraken games\, theater tickets\, massage or reflexology session\, and more! We’ll have a sing-along and our dessert dash will complete the evening. \nThe theme of this year’s event is ‘Show Your Colors’.  All are invited to come dressed showing your individuality by wearing colors that speak to you. We encourage you to embrace and fearlessly celebrate your identity through color in alignment with our church’s call to BELONG and welcome ALL. We encourage you to have fun with a favorite color scheme: rainbow\, patriotic\, purple\, a favorite hat\, a favorite team color\, etc. Consider this year’s theme an invitation to share a bit more of yourself in a community that is open and affirming and welcomes all! \nThe charities we are supporting this year are: \n\nLambert House – empowers lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and questioning youth through the development of leadership\, social\, and life skills. The original funding for Lambert House was provided by a MUCC family in the 1960s and we continue to support this amazing organization in the work they do to suppler LGBTQ+ youth in Washington and beyond.\nDivine Alternative for Dads Service (DADS) – with a vision of creating stronger fathers and healthier communities\, they try to do this through modeling healthy relationships as a means of creating healthier fathers and families\, work to stop the cycle of family violence and brokenness in order to improve the lives of children and encourage fathers to become agents of change in their communities.\nDoney Coe Pet Clinic – supports the unconditional love between a human and their animal companion. Doney Coe Animal Clinic offers veterinary services and wellness care to the animal companions of qualifying low income and homeless families in Seattle\, Washington. Because every animal matters. This charity was put forth as a result of our long term relationship with Dr. Stan Coe\, a longtime member of MUCC who was one of the founders of the clinic and who passed away this year.\nDuwamish River Cleanup Coalition – provides resources\, knowledge\, and action to build more just environmental futures while working to clean up the Duwamish River. The organization is led by the Indigenous peoples of the Duwamish Tribe to support the ongoing clean-up effort of the Duwamish River.\nSacred Streets – provides a compassionate\, companioning presence in the Pacific Northwest\, reaching out to our neighbors in need\, educating communities\, and advocating for readily accessible mental health care that attends to the whole person. This charity has provided extensive trainings to our community over the year to support ways to best walk with compassion with our unhoused neighbors with mental health needs.\nInterbay Village – a community in our neighborhood who provides tiny houses that have a capacity to serve up to 90 people. The program provides 24/7 staffing\, on-site case managers\, behavioral health services\, security\, a community kitchen\, on-site hygiene\, and laundry.\nElizabeth Gregory House – our newest beneficiary that provides a welcoming and respectful refuge for women who are experiencing homelessness\, trauma or economic insecurity have access to a caring community and critical resources.\n\nYou can reserve your dinner by accessing this link.
