The American Legion Post One will conduct a Memorial Day Observation at the Ft. Lawton Post National Cemetery, Discovery Park, Seattle, Monday, May 29, 2023 at 11 AM. Post members and the general public are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Observance is to honor our past Veteran who made ultimate sacrifice for our great country. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, began after the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. After World War I, it came to be observed in honor of those who had died in all U.S. wars, and its name changed to Memorial Day. Since 1971 Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday in stead of the original March 31 date.
American Flags will be placed one boot length in front of each veteran tombstone in the Cemetery.
A Honor Guard will present the US Flag. The Pledge of allegiance will be conducted, taps played as well as prayers and a few speeches. At the end of formal ceremony, you may take a self-guided tour of Ft. Lawton Post National Cemetery. Come help us celebrate and remember our past heroes. Water and coffee will be available.
You may park in the Cemetery.
